Professional Training

Dr. Michelle Michaels moved to Tuscaloosa for her APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She received her doctorate from William James College in Boston and is a licensed psychologist in the state of Alabama. She worked as a Staff Psychologist at the University of Alabama and currently works as a Clinical Psychologist at the Tuscaloosa VA. Dr. Michaels also has training and experience administering assessments and psychotherapy in Spanish.

What therapy will look like

We offer a brief 15-minute phone consultation to answer your questions and to understand your clinical needs. During the first session, Dr. Michaels conducts a thorough clinical interview. Decisions on treatment goals, treatment options, and the pace of therapy are made together, in a collaborative manner. Each therapy session is 50 minutes long and can range in focus depending on the treatment goals identified.

Approach to Therapy

Dr. Michaels believes in a collaborative and active approach to therapy. She works to help clients address a variety of conditions and improve their overall quality of life. She practices humanistic and evidence-based approaches, and she is committed to maintaining cultural humility and openness to everyone's experiences.

"What's really important to me is that therapy and mental health not be seen as mysteries. I believe in having an ongoing conversation about how therapy works, what we're doing in therapy, and why we're doing it."
